Hi everyone. Have searched through all posts hoping for answer to my question but nothing doing. I have been taking methotrexate for about 4 months and the past 6 weeks I have been under the Doctor for High Blood Pressure and increased Heart Rate. The main worry is the heart rate has been over 100 for the last 4 weeks. Have had chest x rays , full blood counts and am due to have Thyroide blood test on Thursday. I am also short of breath. Cant go up stairs without being out of breath. My liver function was 58 and have gone down this week to 38. The Methorexate is taken by injection 10mg. When I saw the GP yesterday he said it could be to do with the methotrexate or that an inflamation can cause the increased blood pressure and heart rate.. Has anyone else had these symptons. I am seriously thinking of coming off methorexate but need to get as much information before I talk to Rheumy nurses. My next appt is on Thursday which is also the same day as I inject. Thanks to all those who always answer my posts. I dont know what I would do without this forum Christine

Hello Chris,
I have a speedy heart and higher BP- for me its to do with steroids. are you on these? had a jab of it recently?
i would be VERY surprised if it was MTX, although mtx can cause lung issues. MTX takes 6mths to get out of your system so stopping suddenly wont help really.
Thyroid is an issue linked with the endocrine system (steroids systems included in this) and you can develop thyroid issues.
Inflammation and pain can put up temperature, BP and heart rate. Pain relief and plenty of it is the answer if this is the issue.

Hi Chris As Jenni says it is unlikely to be methotrexate at the root of the problem. The breathlessness could be due to the RA and lung issues. The most likely cause from what you have said is a high level of inflammation causing BP/pulse increase. Are you on any other drugs apart from methotrexate? Lyn x

Hi Lyn and Jenni. I have had conflicting suggestions from one GP to the next. The only other drugs I take are Amitriptylene and Tramadol. I also take Epilim for Epilepsy but this is something I have had since age of 13. I had steroid injection to ease the pain but that was about 3 months ago. I am waiting to have infusion. Have been on waiting list since last October. I am due to see Rheumy nurse tomorrow to pick up my next 4 mtx injections so will talk to her and let you know how I get on. Many thanks for your help. Its so confusing isnt it. Christine x

Hi Christine Yes, it can be confusing at times! Is your RA well controlled on the methotrexate? I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to come off it if it is in fact controlling the RA for you. It is certainly a well regarded drug and very effective in the treatment of RA. Hope you get more information when you see the nurse and start to feel better soon, Lyn x

Hi. Saw Rheumy Nurse who agreed that it wasnt the methotrexate that would be causing my problems but also didnt think it would be the steroids. Waiting for Thyroid result now and also will be seeing the Consultant in around 10 days. Hey, Good news though. Both my sons and their wife/girlfriend have just found out they are expecting around the end of the year. Wow that was a shock but a great one. Will be in touch as soon as I have any other news. Thankyou Christine x

how lovely chris re the babies i have to say for a long while rheumatology told me that my troubles were not steroid related until I was seen by endocrinology these things were taken altogether more seriously and properly investigated. In my experience, rheumatology never do like to say it is their drugs at fault!
Love to you- hope you enjoy the easter break how to be a velvet bulldoser
